Chapter Chat

The Wild Robot by Peter Brown was the first book of the year to be studied through the -free to join- group 'Chapter Chat'.  I chose to join Chapter Chat as I was changing class level, and wanted to ensure a great quality novel for my year 4/5 class.

Another reason was that Chapter Chat provides questions, ideas and activities that prompt deeper thinking, and in particular,  interesting and motivating ways for students to respond to texts.

Due to swimming and buddy class commitments this book took us all term to read. So we did not keep up with the Chapter Chats timetable. However, once we really got into the book, (which took a week or two), the entire class loved it and voted to read the sequel book next term. 

The Wild Robot explores themes of friendship, resilience, curiosity and creativity. The children were very interested in all the many animals that lived on the island, and were wanting to research them further. The book felt as though it were designed to be a class novel. Even Chitchat the squirrel, talks so fast that the children related it to writing without commas and full stops. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. 


Here are some pictures the students loved doing in response to the book. Next term we will delve deeper into different ways to 'respond to this text'.

Fa'ataupati Te Māhuri Mānuka & Te Manu Tukutuku (Hornby Primary & South Hornby Schools)

 The highlight for me of our 2024 Pasifika Fiafia was making a wee collaboration with South Hornby School work. We had the Fa'ataupati working well with our Pasifika TA teaching our tama.  We wanted to share our performance with the tama from Manu Tukutuku- South Hornby, to perform a joint fa'ataupati at Fiafia. Great experience and energy, and a real community effort. I think the practice was even more fun than the performance!

DF1 Day 1 Manaiakalani - True, large-scale collaboration

When I say I work at a 'Manaiakalani' School, I am often asked what that means.  I have to admit I did not have a very good answer.  Link to the Manaiakalani story . Manaiakalani Where did the name come from? The local Ka ū matua was asked to gift a name to the Trust. When the purpose of the Trust was explained to him, after some time he returned with a Hawaiian word Manaiakalani.  Manaiakalani is the name of a star line, translated "The Hook from Heaven" and the name of the demi-god Māui Tikiti a Taranga’s fishhook, which he used to pull up a giant fish at the bottom of the ocean – a metaphor for the discovery of new islands at the bottom of the earth. It’s also a perfect metaphor for our journey of discovery using digital learning tools as a hook and a guide to deliver the knowledge our children need to be successful citizens of the 21st century.
