The Power of a Book!

This year I finally discovered the beauty of the book 'Holes'. My Year 4/5 class loved it. We made a deal not to watch the movie before we finished the book...some children couldn't wait. The best part of the children's reaction to the book was our discussions about the characters. We would have long chats at 'fruit time' about what kind of humans they were. About how they felt, how there was good and bad in each character. We discussed what they themselves would do if they were at Camp Greenlake.

What I appreciated most, is this book was not part of a 'lesson study', so there was no pressure to complete activities...just good old discussion (oral language) and lots of deeper thinking and prediction.

On Book Character Day - I dressed up as Stanley Yelnats - and it was a hoot!

My mission for reading this book....promote the joy of reading...COMPLETED!
